SOGETI UK BLOG

Software testing is an rewarding, challenging, growth industry which offers an excellent career path for anybody willing, able, and suited. But what are the qualities and educational achievements a leading provider of structured testing solutions looks for when recruiting software testers?

Let’s start with the basics. When we advertise for new recruits at Sogeti, our job specifications always state that candidates should ideally be graduate calibre, and industry-specific certifications are a real plus.

In reality, due to the evolution of the testing world, we do have excellent senior professionals across our business who are not graduates, nor do they hold modern certifications. Instead they joined us with an invaluable amount of business acumen, specific application knowledge and system performance experience. In these cases we look beyond educational qualifications – for example if an individual has demonstrated particular skills in testing with financial services clients and end-to-end transactional environments – but it would be more typical for applicants to have degree-level qualifications.

As a consultancy service, Sogeti has particular expectancies of our recruits that go beyond qualifications and certifications. Specifically, we look for consultants that are not only strong technically, but are equipped for the additional demands of consultancy – excellent communications skills, confidence, and the attention to detail to spot those defects and bugs that no one else could. These areas are extremely important for us and so we have specific test factored in to our interview process which focuses on those skills. We conduct a technical interview first, coupled with a follow up interview that judges three key criteria – commercial acumen, problem solving abilities and communication skills. If a candidate can prove to us that they excel at those skills then they are halfway to becoming a software testing consultant.

Of course this doesn’t mean that we don’t take industry standard certifications very seriously.  At Sogeti we expect every consultant to achieve the ISEB/ISTQB Foundation certification in software testing. This qualification demonstrates an excellent basic level of ability in the field and forms the basis to build a demonstrable knowledge of software testing. Importantly, this certification imparts formal structured methods. As a consultancy, one of the key areas in which we help our clients is by bringing structure and controls into their testing processes, so these methodologies and processes really help in those environments.

Most clients today would expect software testing consultants to hold ISEB/ISTQB qualifications. However, if we feel we can recruit excellent management-level testing professionals who have worked in business for a number of years without going down the formal training route, then we are happy to actively build on that hands-on experience by providing employees with structured training as necessary. If candidates are a great fit based on other attributes, we can put them on courses that will guide their on-going development. In time the all-important Foundation certification usually leads consultants to challenge themselves with Intermediate and Advanced courses as well as specialist certifications.

At Sogeti we are fortunate enough to have an excellent training arm, so ultimately those industry-recognised accreditations are fundamental for us in directly benefitting both consultants and clients. However, if potential consultants can prove to us they excel in the three personality traits of communication skills, commercial acumen and problem solving, we can build on their natural skills and put them on track for a very successful career in software testing.

If you think you have the qualities of a software test consultant and would like to hear more about how we recruit, or let us know more about your relevant experience, please feel free to contact us  – there’s a number of ways to contact us as listed in my earlier blog post.

Earlier this month several of us from Sogeti attended the Graduate Summer Fair at London’s ExCel. Open to graduates from across the UK, it was an opportunity for university leavers to meet and ask questions to prospective employers.

There was a broad range of companies in attendance; exhibiting alongside Sogeti were the likes of Bloomberg, IBM and Land Rover. For Sogeti, attending the fair was part of our ongoing graduate recruitment drive and a chance to discuss job opportunities and offer advice to any graduates considering a career in software testing.

It was a great event and we ended up with hundreds of registrations of interest.

I know software testing is an incredibly fast-paced environment with excellent benefits – competitive salaries, opportunities to work across the globe, the privilege of working with leading innovators.  After all, I work in it.  But it was great to have so many interested graduates asking relevant questions about what we do, how we do it, and how they can develop their career.

I was particularly pleased at how many graduates had really done their homework beforehand – researched into Sogeti and software testing so they could ask well-considered questions about how we work and what we do.

These well-prepared, inquisitive types at the event, gripping their smartphones, are just the kind of graduates that excel in software testing. An inherent interest in technology and the fundamental impact it has on how we live and work is a great starting point. You also need to be confident, able to develop and ask solid questions, and have strong commercial awareness.  Other qualities include the capacity to be creative, sometimes diplomatic and able to think in, around and outside the box!

If you’re a graduate interested in a career in testing but were unable to make it to the event, don’t worry. You can read about opportunities with Sogeti on our recruitment site or find us on Facebook. If you have any questions at all, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
